While San Francisco's Tenderloin is infamous as a neighborhood blighted by homelessness, poverty, prostitution, and addiction, it is also a community rich in cultural diversity and human resilience. When Nancy Deutsch began working as an Artist-in-Residence at a low-income housing project in the Tenderloin, her goal was to bring together immigrant mothers, daughters, and elders so that they could share their life stories with each other and their community. Now, with the publication of Voices of Our Own, they are sharing their words with the world. The contributors to Voices of Our Own range in age from seven to seventy-seven and speak over eleven different languages. Through journal writing, oral history, poetry, and photography, these women and children speak passionately about the meaning of home, the spirit of survival, and the power of hope. |
